Our Statement on Gov. McAuliffe’s Veto of HB1318

Richmond, VA – We applaud Governor McAuliffe for keeping our voting system free, fair, and accessible. Our democracy is strongest when we all have the opportunity to participate. The right to vote, to choose our leaders and to weigh in on issues affecting our lives is at the heart of what it means to be an American.

Requiring a photo ID for mail-in ballots makes no sense,” stated Tram Nguyen, co-executive director. “HB1318 does nothing but increase barriers for voting while creating additional work and raising costs for local registrars. Furthermore, because the bill only requires certain kinds of voters to submit an ID, it fails to treat all voters equally and insinuates that some voters are more trustworthy and deserving of easier access than others.”
