New Virginia Majority Applauds State Supporting President’s Exec Action on Immigration

Attorney General signs Amicus Brief supporting the president’s actions on DACA/DAPA

Richmond –New Virginia Majority (NVM) applauds Virginia’s Attorney General Mark Herring decision to sign an amicus brief in support of efforts by 14 states, numerous civil rights and labor groups to defend President Obama’s executive action on Immigration.

Shortly before implementation of the president’s initiatives, a federal judge issued an injunction and ruled in favor of 26 states that challenged the DACA/DAPA initiatives for undocumented immigrants.

The judge argued incorrect procedures by President Obama and that the immigration initiatives would impose major burdens on state budgets. In response a group of 14 states filed a motion to lift the injunction that affects as many as 5 million individuals.

The amicus brief written in support of the executive order, supported by numerous localities, civil rights and labor groups, highlights the economic, fiscal and public safety benefits to be gained from these initiatives

In signing the amicus brief, AG Herring joins the growing progressive movement of states and organizations embracing smart and comprehensive immigration reform.

“We applaud attorney general Herring for signing the amicus brief in support of the president’s executive orders on DACA/DAPA,” said Tram Nguyen, co-executive director of NVM. “It is clear and the amicus brief documents this—that immigrants whether naturalized or undocumented, contribute in a number of ways to our overall vitality of the nation. DACA/DAPA are great steps in the right direction toward comprehensive immigration reform that allows us to keep families together and acknowledge the positive role immigration has served historically to reinvigorate America economically and also culturally,” added Nguyen.
