Arlington Cab Drivers Rally Against UberX

Updated at 5:55 p.m.) Nearly a hundred Arlington (Va.) taxi drivers crowded into the County Board offices Thursday afternoon, asking county policymakers to take action against UberX.

UberX, which launched in D.C. last summer, is a smartphone app that connects users with drivers who use their personal vehicles to give on-demand rides. It presents itself as a “better, faster, cheaper” alternative to taxis.

But in Arlington, taxi drivers and companies are becoming more vocal in their criticism of UberX. They say it’s unregulated, dangerous and illegal. That, and it’s hurting their bottom line.

VA Changes Policies on Felons' Voting Rights

April 18, 2014

RICHMOND, Va. — Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced policy changes Friday that will make it easier for violent felons and drug offenders to regain their voting rights.

The waiting period for violent felons to apply for restoration of rights has been reduced to three years from five, the governor said. He also has removed drug offenses from the list of violent crimes that are subject to the waiting period. Virginians convicted of felony drug crimes will now be considered nonviolent offenders, allowing them to regain their rights immediately after completing their prison time and paying any court-imposed costs.

“We believe that once an individual has served their time and fully paid their debt to society, they should have their civil rights restored without any additional burdens or punishments,” said Tram Nguyen, co-executive director of Virginia New Majority.

March for immigration reform

Our dreams of a pathway to citizenship may become a reality.

We have an historic opportunity to win immigration reform in the US. There are just a handful of legislators that could guarantee that a new immigration reform law would pass the US congress. One of them is right here in Northern Virginia, Representative Frank Wolf (R-10). We have to let Frank Wolf know that we are counting on him and create a more secure and fair Virginia for all of us. March with us to ask Frank Wolf to support a pathway to citizenship.
